Oranjemund transform?
Transforming a town like Oranjemund is imperative to ensure its long-term sustainability and resilience. Mining towns, by their nature, often develop a critical reliance on the mining industry for their economic survival. However, this dependency poses a significant risk to the town’s future when the mine inevitably closes. The closure of the mine can lead to the collapse of social, socio-economic, and economic structures within the community, threatening the very existence of the town itself.
Town Transformation initiatives are essential to severing this critical dependency responsibly and proactively. By diversifying the town’s economy away from sole reliance on mining, it becomes more resilient to economic shocks and better positioned for sustainable growth post-mine closure. The objective is to ensure that the town can thrive beyond the mining era, fostering a stable and vibrant community for generations to come. Although such transformations require time and concerted effort, typically spanning around 15 years, they are essential for securing the future viability of mining towns like Oranjemund.
Town Transformation Program
The Oranjemund Transform initiative represents a collaborative effort between Namdeb, the town council, and the local community, launched in 2014 with a shared vision for sustainable development by 2030. Co-created by all stakeholders, including community members, this initiative aims to achieve three primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to transfer the management of the town from the mine to the town council, while also privatizing property ownership to empower residents and foster a sense of ownership.
Secondly, the program aims to transition socio-economic services, such as education and healthcare, into a normalized state, ensuring their continuity and accessibility for all residents. Finally, Oranjemund Transform endeavors to transform the town’s economy by diversifying its composition, fostering the development of new industries and supporting the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). By pursuing these objectives collectively, the program aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and prosperity of Oranjemund, laying the foundation for a vibrant and resilient community well beyond the era of diamond mining.
