About Oranjemund
Oranjemund has long held a mystique, shrouded in the veil of restricted access. Established in 1936 as an accessory to the diamond mining industry, it remained a closely guarded secret, accessible only to those employed by the mine.
Friends and family visits were strictly regulated, adding to the enigmatic aura surrounding the town. However, in 2011, a significant shift occurred when Oranjemund transitioned from private ownership to a public town under municipal governance. This marked the beginning of a new era for the community nestled at the mouth of the Orange River.
By 2017, after 85 years of seclusion, Oranjemund welcomed the public for the first time in its history. This pivotal moment set the stage for transformative change. No longer beholden to a single industry, Oranjemund embarked on a journey of town transformation, aimed at fostering sustainability and diversification beyond diamond mining. Over the past decade, strides have been made in establishing local governance and reducing dependency on mining revenue, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for Oranjemund and its inhabitants.
